- Europe questioned, major Crisis will start in 2008/ A country snap the door to Europe.. other leaders of the Member States will contest the choking totalitarianism of Brussels.
- The USA will end up signing concrete measures to fight against the reheating of planet, 2009.

What we do and say and how we spend our money is always legal and open to scrutiny. If any one of our staff members has been arrested you can count on the fact it was probably for sitting down in a peaceful protest of animal suffering, in the time-honored tradition of Cesar Chavez, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. The $1,500 that we gave to the Earth Liberation Front press office a few years ago was to help with legal bills for a good animal protectionist whom we felt was being harassed unfairly for speaking his mind about animal abuse and who to this day has never been charged with anything!

We believe in the right to legal counsel, and that is what we have provided to humane people on a few occasions. One example is the case of 60-year-old school teacher Roger Troen, who took in some rescued rabbits who had been dropped on his doorstep one night and who was later charged with accepting stolen property when it was discovered that the rabbits had been taken from the University of Oregon. We turned that trial on its head, exposing the university’s hideously cruel practices, as well as the deaths of countless primates there. In the end, the judge said that he was ashamed to call the University of Oregon his alma mater.

Animal abusers are terrified of the strides that PETA is making, and they are trying every trick in the book to squelch our right to tell people the truth. It is a measure of our effectiveness that they are feeling so threatened by our achievements, and it only inspires us to work even harder for animals. The Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit corporation run by lobbyist Richard Berman through his Washington, D.C.-based for-profit public relations company, Berman & Co. The Center for Consumer Freedom, formerly known as the Guest Choice Network, was set up by Berman with a $600,000 “donation” from tobacco company Philip Morris.

Berman arranges for large sums of corporate money to find its way into nonprofit societies of which he is the executive director. He then hires his own company as a consultant to these nonprofit groups. Of the millions of dollars “donated” by Philip Morris between the years 1995 and 1998, 49 percent to 79 percent went directly to Berman or Berman & Co.

Richard Berman is an influence peddler. He has worked out a scheme to funnel charitable donations from wealthy corporations into his own pocket. In exchange, he provides a flurry of disinformation, flawed studies, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and trade-industry articles, as well as access to his high-level government contacts, who are servants of the industries he represents.

Berman’s name might sound familiar. In 1995, Berman and Norm Brinker, his former boss at Steak and Ale Restaurants, were identified as the special-interest lobbyists who donated the $25,000 that disgraced then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was hauled before the House Ethics Committee for influence-peddling over the money. Berman and Brinker were lobbying against raising the minimum wage.

Richard Berman is a spin doctor. For example, he has argued against a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) initiative to lower the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for drivers by claiming that the stricter limits would punish responsible social drinkers. He has claimed that U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warnings about salmonella-related food poisoning are just “whipping up fear over food.”

Here’s how an internal Philip Morris memo described Berman’s spin: “His proposed solution would broaden the focus of the ‘smoking issue,’ and expand into the bigger picture of over-regulation.” Smoking won’t kill you; over-regulation will.

Berman is “a one-man wrecking crew on important issues.” His approach has been described as “misleading” and “despicable.” Berman has been called “a tobacco company whore,” but he’s branched out since then.

Using “freedom of choice” as his battle cry, Berman has now taken on PETA and a number of other groups and organizations whose points of view could have an impact on the profits of his clients by waking consumers up. Berman’s Guest Choice Network has an “advisory panel” whose members in 1998 included officials representing companies ranging from Cargill Processed Meat Products and Outback Steakhouse to Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association and Sutter Home Winery. Berman’s clients are companies with vested interests in low employee wages; cheap, unhealthy restaurant-chain food, particularly meat; and tobacco, soft drink, and alcohol consumption—companies like Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Armour Swift, and Philip Morris, whose product line includes Kraft Foods and everything from Marlboro cigarettes to Oscar Meyer wieners and which is a major shareholder in its former subsidiary Miller Brewing, now known as SABMiller.

PETA’s recent successes in gaining fast-food industry concessions for more humane conditions for farm animals have sent ripples of fear through the food and beverage service industry. About the same time that McDonald’s buckled to PETA’s demands, Richard Berman changed his front group’s name and stepped up his attacks.

The key to Berman’s aggressive strategy is, in his own words, “to shoot the messenger ... we’ve got to attack their credibility as spokespersons,”—an interesting remark from someone whose background and funding so severely challenge his own credibility.

Dear friends,

Eric called this evening with an update on his medical condition. At 8:00 this evening he was called out to talk to a sargeant who discussed his medical situation with him. After this conversation, the sargeant sent Eric back to medical to be seen by a doctor. The doctor (a different doctor than the one he saw earlier in the day) took his vitals and acknowledged that he had pericarditis in the spring. She asked him if this felt like the same thing, and Eric said that it did. The doctor said she would request that blood work, an ECG, and an x-ray be done - but more than likely none of this will happen until after the holiday weekend (on Tuesday). She also went over with him the medication he received in the past and said she would put in a request that he begin receiving it again. Eric received medication at around 9:30 this evening. When Erictried to discuss the cause of the pericarditis (more than likely, his diet) the doctor was evasive and sent him back to his cell.

Because his diet is almost certainly a cause of the pericarditis, Eric has decided to begin a hunger strike, once again, to gain access to vegan food. The last "meal" he ate was at 8:30 am - a banana and two pieces of bread. The jail has provided Eric with vegan food in the past and there is absolutely no reason they cannot do it now. Please call the jail and request that Eric be given vegan meals immediately.

2) Eric needs to be given vegan food immediately. His heart condition
will persist until the underlying causes are treated, and his nutrition is integral to this.

3) Eric needs to receive an ECG, blood work and an x-ray ASAP. These tests are imperative to determining other possible causes of the pericarditis. Again, until they fully understand what is causing the condition, they will only be treating symptoms. [When Eric visited the UC Davis Medical Center in the spring, the hospital requested that the jail do blood work to determine what might be causing the pericarditis It is
uncertain as to whether or not this ever actually happened.]

Eric has not received vegan meals from the jail since one week before his trial - the beginning of September. It has been difficult for him to maintain his health since that time, with so little nutrition available. Because of this, he begins his hunger strike with a body whose health is already depleted. We cannot stress how urgent it is that the jail begin feeding Eric food he can eat, and that they fully address his medical situation.

October 2, 2007 --- All of the dead animals in California are added to the feed of chicken, fish, beef, shrimp, etc.,which we humans eat every day. Virtually all of the animals killed in shelters and veterinary clinics,road kill, medical laboratories, feed lots, deceased wildlife, etc., are sent to one company, West Coast Rendering in Vernon, CA, where they are piled up and left to decompose for days before being “rendered” into a sale-able product.
“Rendering means that these dead animals are cooked in a giant stew pot for an hour, at just above boiling, and then the fat is drained off this soup and put in drums for shipment to cattle feed facilities in California and elsewhere,” said Leo Grillo, founder of the largest care-for-life cat & dog sanctuary in the world, D.E.L.T.A. Rescue, of Glendale, CA, “the rest is ground up into a powder and loaded by tractor into either a container or an open grain truck, which is later used for grain and feed transport.”
“Our D.E.L.T.A. Rescue Humane Investigation Unit followed trucks to American companies where the powder, now called ‘protein meal,’ is added to farm-animal feed. We also followed containers to the ports where they are loaded for shipment to Asia ... to be added to feed for the farmed fish and seafood that comes back to the United States and is sold in our supermarkets. Check the labels of the seafood in the stores: ‘product of Thailand, Vietnam, etc.’”
Los Angeles County has contracted to provide its dead animals to the same rendering plant for decades. Four years ago, when Grillo informed the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors of where their own Los Angeles County Animal Control’s dead animals were going, the Supervisors were divided. Some said that they didn’t know about it, but did nothing; others said that this practice is perfectly legal.
Grillo continued, “What lawmakers need to realize is that these dead bodies, along with all their cancers and other diseases, viruses, veterinary treatments, experimental laboratory drugs, chemotherapies, toxins and bacteria from decomposition, are being fed to us. Yet we still wonder where all OUR cancer is coming from.
And ‘chronic wasting disease’ in deer, which are also rendered, is caused by the same virus as ‘mad cow disease!’ Does that tell you something? And if you’re a vegetarian, don’t think you’re safe: dairy and egg producers eat these same dead animals, and fertilizer used at vegetable farms contains the same ‘animal by-products.’With the rash of food-borne diseases in America lately, it is clear that we are being poisoned by the food we eat.”

Before stocking up on candy this Halloween, you should know that chocolate-maker Mars Inc.—creator of M&M's, Snickers, and other candies—continues to fund deadly animal tests, despite the facts that the tests are not required by law and that more reliable human studies could be used.
Mars has funded cruel experiments in which mice were fed a candy ingredient and forced to swim in a pool of paint. The mice had to find a platform to try to avoid drowning, only to be killed and dissected later. Mars also supported an experiment that involved cramming baby mice into small Plexiglas chambers and then submerging the chambers for nearly five hours in a chilled bath to determine whether a chocolate ingredient affected the mice's breathing rates.
Mars' top competitor, Hershey's, has pledged to PETA that it will not fund or conduct experiments on animals. Please urge Mars to follow Hershey's lead and immediately end all support for animal tests!

"My Friend Flicka," a remake of a tear-jerker horse story from a few decades ago, is designed to pull on your heartstrings so that those involved in making the movie will become wealthy/wealthier. The facts that are surfacing, however, indicate the only tears worth shedding are for the animals killed in making the movie and those responsible should be facing criminal animal cruelty charges. So far, two horses (that we know of) have died during filming. The death of the first horse occurred on April 11 at Big Sky Ranch in Simi Valley, California. E Online has reported, "According to the AHA'S report, a horse broke its leg 'after a misstep' and suffered a 'very rare' injury requiring the animal to be euthanized." The second horse died two weeks later on April 25 during the filming of an inherently dangerous rodeo event called the "Wild Horse Race"

Home for Animals is a non-profit association registered in Germany. Since 1996, animal-friends have made it their task to provide a good place for many animals, large and small, where they can live until the natural end of their life, without fear of being slaughtered. On the Johannishof at the southern edge of the Spessart forest we have grown in the meantime to have 700 animals in our care.
There are horses, donkeys, cows, lamas, alpacas, sheep, goats, pot-bellied pigs and wild pigs, foxes, rabbits and various types of water fowl, as well as peacocks, chickens and doves. They are all well cared for by a veterinarian, fed with good feed, housed in nice barns and have enough pastureland. We want to make amends on a small scale for the infinitely great suffering that was and is done to the animal world. Millions of animals are deliberately killed, hunted, shot, tortured, cruelly mistreated and much more of the same is done to them. But like us, animals are creatures of God. Like us, they love freedom and security. This is why we consider it our task to treat them accordingly.
We have begun in a small way to give animals a home where they may again find their spiritual standing and value. Animals are our second neighbours.

In the early 20th century, a physician practicing in Chicago became the head of a group known as the Contact Commission. This small group was the focal point for the production of, and the primary custodian for, the final text of The Urantia Book. They were sworn not to disclose details about the transactions in order to preclude future generations from venerating the participants. Israel has suspended imports of live sheep from Australia after Israeli veterinarians refused a shipment of 10,000 animals, citing their health status. Australian Quarantine Inspection Services (AQIS) has launched an official investigation into the shipment because of the large number of animals who died during the long journey to the Middle East. Every year, millions of Australian sheep who are no longer producing enough wool are crammed onto extremely crowded, disease-ridden export ships and sent to the Middle East for slaughter. Tens of thousands fall ill from injuries, heat exhaustion, dehydration, starvation, or infection. In 2005 alone, almost 40,000 sheep died en route to the Middle East after becoming stressed, ill, and injured; suffering from salmonella and starvation; or being trampled to death by other sheep trying to reach food or water.
Please ask Israel to permanently ban cruel live sheep imports from Australia, signing the letter online.

The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ Minister Loyola Hearn released a one-year Total Allowable Catch (TAC) that allows 335,000 seals to be killed this year.

The Norwegian Olympic Committee refuses to remove Chinese raccoon-dog fur from its winter team uniforms despite the fact that millions of these animals suffer tormented lives on fur farms.
PETA recently wrote to the committee and enclosed a video containing recent footage from undercover investigations into fur farms in China. Hidden cameras revealed that fur farmers swing raccoon dogs and foxes by their hind legs and smash their heads on the ground, injuring the animals but often leaving them conscious as they are skinned alive. When the fur is finally peeled off over animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on a heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera

In a democratic society, such as our Western World, it's unacceptable that two of those cartoonists had to go into hiding after some calls in which they were threatened by dead. Some Islamic countries, such as Saoudi-Arabia, have already declared that they would boycot Danish wares and goods because of the cartoons. The Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen was asked by a number of ambassadors of Islamic countries to undertake measures against Jyllands Posten. Fortunately Rasmussen declared that Denmark is a country in which the freedom of press is a high-valued good. And in the city of Gaza (Palestinia), a number of 15 armed men attacked the office of European Union-embassy. These are all facts that cannot be accepted as a legitime reaction against the cartoons.
Because our Western society, to which Denmark also belongs to, is in danger after those threats of an agressive anti-democratic group of Muslims; this petition has been started to show the sympathy and empathy towards Jyllands Posten and the Danish society in general. Norway's Hå Municipality and Norwegian fur farmers are planning to build a massive fur-farming complex in Rogaland, in the western part of Norway. The complex, which would be the largest in Norway, would house more than 110,000 animals. It would be financed by investments from fur farmers and from the Norwegian government. This is despite the fact that the majority of Norwegians are against fur farming and, according to Norwegian animal rights group NOAH, a Norwegian court has ruled that fur farming is unethical.
Animals on fur farms suffer severe confinement and deprivation of all that is natural to them. Fur-farmed animals are often seen bobbing their heads and pacing in their dirty cages—disturbing, repetitive behavior that is a sign of severe psychological distress. In 1986, Gene and Lorri Bauston found a living sheep abandoned on a stockyard "deadpile." They rescued the sheep, named her Hilda, and created Farm Sanctuary.
